  这是一本英文专著。全书22章,除导言一章外,包括4个部分,分别为中国旱地的基本自然特点(5 章:分布和类型;气候;地形地貌;植被;土壤),主要问题(3 章:水资源和节水;风蚀、沙尘暴、荒漠化及其控制;水蚀及其控制),土壤养分管理(6章:氮素,磷素,钾素及微量元素;配方施肥,水肥耦合,综合管理),土壤水分管理(3章:土壤水分运移及损耗;提高水分利用的传统农业措施;提高水分效率的现代技术),农作管理(4章:抗旱生理,种植制度,生物灾害防治;发展旱地农业的前景和对策)。本书编写历时十多年。1992年,作者应美国\"土壤进展\"主编之邀请撰写了\"中华人民共合国旱地的分布及管理\"一文(The distribution and management of drylands in the People \'s Republic of China\"(全文长达157页)后,一直收集资料,大量阅读文献。以后又应美国农学会、作物学会和土壤学会之邀参加编写了其所主编的\"旱地农业\"一书,撰写东亚旱地农业一章。结合这两书的编写作者深深感到需要出一本中国旱地农业的英文专著。所以近几年来夜以继日忙于此书,写得很艰苦,也很辛苦。现在总算完稿。全书大部章节均请外国友人看过,语言规范无误。为什么要编写此书,作者主编的中文版前言对此有论述。原文附后,以资参考。要说明的是,本书由作者独立撰写,与作者主编的中文版专著虽同名,但在取材立意和内容完全不同,不是中文版的译文!
