南极环境现状与演变是全球性研究中的重要问题。本书初步探讨了南极长城站地区(乔治王岛菲尔德斯半岛)现代环境地球化学特征。通过对自然环境演变的研究,在综合论证的基础上,本书提出了生物地球化学指示元素等研究方法,恢复了新冰期以来南极长城站地区的温度和降水变化,以及西湖水钙含量的变化。通过与智利南部地区的对比研究,试推断了16000年以来南极长城站地区的自然环境演变以及南极辐合带的摆动。本书还对南极长城站地区的自然环境与中国东部地区自然带南北摆动、西部山地冰川活动以及东部海平面升降运动之间,在时间和变化幅度上所存在的关系作了较深入的对比分析。
